I am an events enthusiast, amateur photographer, and lover of all things salted caramel. I Snapchat almost everything, swear that caffeine is the solution to all things, and don’t go anywhere without a Kate Spade accessory. I also love connecting people, building community, and sharing stories. I enjoy fashion and style, but I am by no means a fashion expert. I love the business world and the influence it has on shaping culture, but I don’t work in an office in downtown. In fact, right now I work with kids. I’m the Director of Creative Programming and Kindergarten Assistant Teacher at a Montessori school. I love getting to work with 3-5 year olds, and I find they teach me so much about life. Aside from my job, I am also the Content Manager and Events Coordinator for Socality

Socality is a collective of local communities connected globally for eternity. We are committed to creating spaces of belonging online and turning these into real life transactions. Through our platforms we help connect and create influencers and mobilize individuals to serve and impact their local communities. We’re big on collaboration and creativity, authenticity and action, and drawing out purpose in people. Socality launched in January 2014, and since then has seen incredible social media growth. I jumped on board last April and love that it’s all about community, using influence to shape culture and make a difference, and connecting these stories globally.

Now what about Biology? When I first started my BSc. I had every intention to go into Education afterwards. Along the way I fell in love with events and non profits and social enterprises. In many ways Socality is like a start up non profit, because of our mission for social good. Ultimately it’s all about people, and connecting people’s stories. I also have the privilege of collaborating with many non profits, and as the Content Manager I love getting to share their stories through Socality’s platforms. It’s also been a great outlet for my administrative and organization skills, and I love that I get to be part of creating events and spaces to meet incredible and inspiring people from all over the world. Even though I am not using my Biology degree directly, I feel even more fortunate to be able to use my gifts and strengths for a purpose that I am passionate about- connecting people.

In university I was really involved in extra-curricular activities and had an incredibly close community. In many ways I had let my identity be formed by these things. When I graduated, I felt like I lost a part of that identity and was looking for somewhere to belong. Community has always been a strong value in my life, and in many ways I believe it helps shapes our identity. I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the community and support I had and still have. The world is so connected now through social media, yet so many people feel isolated and alone. Socality for me was about finding that community again, and expanding it globally. I am not only inspired and encouraged by the people around me locally, but now I am also connected globally, and part of a greater story.

We all play a part in each other’s story; we all have the ability to influence. I believe in using influence to shape culture, in the business world, in the minds of the next generation, and on social media.

With that, I’ll leave you today with one of my favourite quotes from Brene Brown,

““You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.”
