As a native Calgarian, I have grown up inspired by the city’s entrepreneurial spirit, innovative flare, and passion for local businesses. From a young age I enjoyed assembling small bake sales, helping my family with summer garage sales, and selling magazine subscriptions to neighbors and friends. More recently, I ran a small card business from my home and enjoyed both the creativity and opportunity for self-expression it offered. Considering my lifelong affinity for commerce, I was naturally compelled to study business in a post-secondary setting.
Becoming a Businesswoman in YYC
I am currently studying at the University of Calgary where I am working towards a degree in Marketing from the Haskayne School of Business in addition to a Psychology degree. Although an uncommon combination, I feel it is important to equip myself with the necessary tools to market and grow businesses while also understanding how to work with and manage a variety of people. I also work for a Human Resources firm in downtown Calgary, Salopek & Associates, where I am involved with marketing, human resources, and business administration. As a Junior Associate, I am constantly surprised by how fast the marketplace is changing and developing; it definitely keeps me on my toes! This September I will be taking some time away from my position at Salopek & Associates to study Marketing and International Business in Barcelona, Spain. I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to study in a new country with a rich business culture and thriving fashion scene!
As an emerging businesswoman, I am always cognizant of my wardrobe and the image it projects. I enjoy wearing timeless, classic outfits that are simple yet chic. Some of my favorite local boutiques include Kensington’s Purr and Adorn in Inglewood. I also love finding a good bargain and typically shop at H&M to find professional staples to compliment my more expensive boutique finds. My featured outfit (as seen above) is one of my absolute favorites! I found my dress on sale at H&M roughly a month ago and it has been one of my best purchases to date. I love that the dress is fitted and simple, yet it has a pop of sparkle around the neckline. I decided to vamp up this outfit by adding a leopard print Steve Madden bag along with a flashy gold Michael Kors watch and jeweled bracelet from Express. I believe in having fun with your business outfits and buying well-fitted pieces that can be dressed up or down with the right accessories. Most importantly however, if you want to become a businesswoman in YYC be sure to dress yourself in confidence and feel good in whatever you’re wearing!
Before I embark on my European adventure, I thought it would be fitting to end with one of my favorite quotes from a Spanish icon in both the business and fashion worlds. Hasta leugo!
