Maddie Byblow.

Hi everyone! My name is Madeleine but most people call me Maddie. I am thrilled to be writing my (first ever) blog post and I’m honoured to have it be for such a great community like ethreeone. I have been secretly admiring Brina from afar for quite some time for her entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to e31., and her amazing style. So needless to say, I was happy to accept the invitation to post here!

A little about me: I am 23 years old, currently living in Victoria for my final semester of my Bachelor of Commerce degree, but Vancouver is home. Now that I am specializing in Entrepreneurship at UVic, I love what I’m learning so far as I have always been determined to be my own boss and someday start a company- what that company is, I am yet to find out. I spent the last four months working for Citizen Relations, a Public Relations agency in Vancouver, and am also passionate about a career in communications. I love to work with ambitious and likeminded people and be engaged in the community, while having the opportunity to express my creative side and see projects through from start to finish. Should I decide not to start a business fresh out of university, I would be thrilled to work in a corporate communications role for a growing company.

One of the things I love most about Vancouver is the people watching and working with all the beautiful and stylish businesswomen. In selecting my outfit for this post, I referred to one of my ‘go-to’ outfits for any important workday or client meeting. I am a big fan of colours (pastels in particular), paired with something clean cut and form fitting like cropped trousers or a skirt. Although, some days I will sport an “all black everything” power outfit, depending on my mood, I usually prefer to wear colours and patterns, as I’d like to think it helps to be more memorable and better reflects my personality. My silk lavender blouse, one of my all time favourites (and significant $ investment), is from Aritzia, and I found the cropped black dress pants at Top Shop. Paired with classic nude pumps from Aldo and a tan leather purse by Mackage, this outfit is one of my better fashion choices to dress for the trendy professional scene of Vancouver. Finally, the black leather jacket is from a store called Pimkie, in Europe, and is probably one of my favourite pieces I brought home from my exchange semester – it just goes with everything!

My recommendations for the perfect business outfit are fairly simple: select pieces that suit your body so that you feel comfortable all day, pair pastel colours with creams or shades, and never underestimate the power of a good pair of heels. My personal choice is nude, 3”+, pointed-toe pumps as they just shout confidence and class (plus they make you look taller, which is a benefit for shorties like me!).

Before I wrap things up here, I want to reiterate how happy I am to write this post for such an empowering and engaging network for women. Should any of you want to reach out to me, please do! Find me on Facebook or LinkedIn , or follow me on Instagram (@madeleiineegrace). Lastly, I’ve just recently bought and finished (in a total of 2 days… I’m an obsessive-compulsive reader) Amy Poehler’s book, Yes Please . I would highly recommend it to anyone who not only enjoys a good laugh and a candid look at a celebrity’s life, but also a story of female success in a male dominated industry. I’ll sign off with a quote from the book that stuck with me:

“Because what else are we going to do? Say no? Say no to an opportunity that may be slightly out of our comfort zone? Quiet our voice because we are worried it is not perfect? I believe great people do things before they are ready.” – Amy Poehler, Yes Please
